As we all know, moving can be an incredibly stressful process. After choosing the right moving company to suit your needs, it’s important to prepare yourself, your home, and your family for both moving day and the moving itself. Being properly prepared and ready on moving day can make your relocation less of a hassle and keep your items organized and safe.

  • Family Moving
    • Preparing for moving with kids? Get your children used to the idea of moving, and get them excited for the new location. It can be a tough adjustment for them, but make sure to keep them engaged and ready for the process. Keep them on a routine to give them a sense of security, and make sure you’re all talking and communicating as a family to ease stress.
  • Moving with pets? On moving day, keep your pets in a quiet room with the door shut, or bring them to a friend’s for the day before coming to get them. This will ensure that they won’t get scared by the noise, get over-stressed or overwhelmed, or won’t try to make a run for it while the movers are in and out of the house. Try to keep them on their routine, and give them a little extra love to ease their confusion.
  • How to Prepare Your Home for a Moving
    • Before moving day, it’s important to sort through all of your items to determine what you’re bringing with you, what you’re throwing out, what you’re donating, and what you’re storing.
      • Start Early. Organize your items room by room early in the process according to ‘take’, ‘throw out’, or ‘donate’. You can space this out, but don’t leave it until the last minute. Make sure to also take a day to go through seasonal items and infrequently used items.
      • Clean as you go. Don’t leave everything a mess that will have to cleaned right before you’re leaving (or even worse, after!). Make sure to clean up any items of dust or grime to make sure everything is in its best condition.
      • Stop buying certain items at the grocery stores. Anything meant to last a long time or anything that will cause a lot of leftovers. You don’t want to have to throw out a bunch of food or take anything with you that is perishable.

Any moving is bound to be stressful, but by preparing and organizing well in advance, you can save yourself and your family a lot of hassle and unneeded stress or hardship. Prepare your home and items so that your things can be organized and packed quickly by your moving company, or if packing by yourself, have your boxes and items ready to go and in an easily accessible space for your movers. Make sure all children and animals are as calm as possible and that they are emotionally ready to deal with the transition.
